PPDA nods to 2nd phase of BAT Stadium project
Phase two of BAT Stadium project in Blantyre is set to start after the Public Procurement and Disposal of Assets Authority (PPDA) gave a ‘no objection’ to the project.
In an interview yesterday, Malawi National Council of Sports chief executive officer Henry Kamata said PPDA and other government organs have all approved the second phase of the project.

He said: “We got all the clearances from PPDA, Ministry of Justice, Government Construction Department and the Anti-Corruption Bureau.”
Kamata said they had already handed over the project to the contractor who is on site.
“The contractor has already started mobilising resources for the project. Actually, work is in progress. If you go there, you will see that they are on site.
The 17 000-capacity stadium project is expected to conclude by early 2028, replacing the demolished BAT Ground, according to Kamata.
“It’s a three-year project. So, by June 2028. The stadium should be ready for opening,” he said.
The construction of the stadium was divided into three phases. The first phase comprised the demolition of existing structures, earth works and levelling while the second phase involves procurement of construction materials and the erection of the structure.
The stadium is expected to have covered stands and an office complex to help generate income for the facility’s maintenance.
In a related development, Zomba Stadium is expected to be opened on September 11.
President Lazarus Chakwera is expected to open the facility, according to Zomba City Council spokesperson Aubrey Moses.
The opening of the stadium is expected to ease football match venues’ challenges which saw teams such as Red Lions playing their matches at Balaka Stadium.
